Controlled-source interferometric redatuming by crosscorrelation and multidimensional deconvolution in elastic media

چکیده
Various researchers have shown that accurate redatuming of controlled seismic sources to downhole receiver locations can be achieved without requiring a velocity model. By placing receivers in a horizontal or deviated well and turning them into virtual sources, accurate images can be obtained even below a complex near-subsurface. Examples include controlled-source interferometry and the virtualsource method, both based on crosscorrelated signals at two downhole receiver locations, stacked over source locations at the surface. Because the required redatuming operators are taken directly from the data, even multiple scattered waveforms can be focused at the virtual-source location, and accurate redatuming can be achieved. To reach such precision in a solid earth, representations for elastic wave propagation that require multicomponent sources and receivers must be implemented. Wavefield decomposition prior to crosscorrelation allows us to enforce virtual sources to radiate only downward or only upward. Virtual-source focusing and undesired multiples from the overburden can be diagnosed with the interferometric point-spread function (PSF), which can be obtained directly from the data if an array of subsurface receivers is deployed. The quality of retrieved responses can be improved by filtering with the inverse of the PSF, a methodology referred to as multidimensional deconvolution.

Point-spread functions for interferometric imaging
Interferometric redatuming is a data-driven method to transform seismic responses with sources at one level and receivers at a deeper level into virtual reflection data with both sources and receivers at the deeper level. Although this method has traditionally been applied by cross-correlation, accurate redatuming through a heterogeneous overburden requires solving a multidimensional deconvolut...
متن کاملSeismic interferometry by crosscorrelation and by multidimensional deconvolution: a systematic comparison
Seismic interferometry, also known as Green’s function retrieval by crosscorrelation, has a wide range of applications, ranging from surface-wave tomography using ambient noise, to creating virtual sources for improved reflection seismology. Despite its successful applications, the crosscorrelation approach also has its limitations. The main underlying assumptions are that the medium is lossles...

Recently, various cross-correlation based methods have emerged to redatum source locations from the earth’s surface to downhole receiver locations. By placing receivers in a horizontal or deviated well below a complex overburden and turning them into virtual sources, accurate imaging can be obtained without requiring a velocity model of the near subsurface. The underlying theory is based on the...

We derive interferometric field representations that are valid for diffusive field methods. The method retrieves the reflection response of the earth, as if the domain above the receiver depth level is homogeneous. It is represented as the flux-normalized up going field deconvolved by the down going field. The deconvolution step can be seen as a weighted crosscorrelation step, which is the usua...
متن کاملTutorial on seismic interferometry. Part II: Underlying theory and new advances
In part II of this two-part tutorial we review the underlying theory of seismic interferometry and discuss various new advances. In the 1990’s the method of time-reversed acoustics was developed. This method employs the fact that the acoustic wave equation for a lossless medium is invariant for time-reversal. When ultrasonic responses recorded by piezoelectric transducers are reversed in time a...
